KNOWING SULTAN NJOYA IBRAHIM

Sultan Njoya Ibrahim came from a family dynasty whose leadership over the Bamum in West Cameroon began in the 14th century. He was crowned sultan in 1886 making him the 17th sultan of Bamum.
Njoya was known to be intelligent having invented a manual corn-grinding mill. He also invented the Bamum’s very first alphabet A- Ka- U- Ku which enabled his people’s history and culture to be accurately presented during his reign.
The sultan was noted to have converted to Christianity and later Islamism abandoning idol worshipping. Later on, he used the influences both religions had on him, blended them with traditional Bamum religion and effectively formed his own religion.
Sultan Njoya Ibrahim had good relationship with the Europeans in Cameroon especially the Germans and the French. But in the year 1931, his relation with the French became sour and consequently caused his deposed and exile by the then French government. He died at the age of 73 two years after he was exiled from his land.
